Powell Prism

Powell Prism is an optical element specifically designed for laser beam shaping, which can convert a Gaussian distributed circular laser spot into a uniformly distributed straight line of light intensity. The surface of a Powell prism is typically a complex two-dimensional non spherical surface (often described as a "curved roof" shape), which can produce controllable spherical aberration. When a Gaussian beam (with a bright center and dark edges) passes through a Powell prism, its non spherical surface will deflect the light rays at the center of the beam more towards the sides, while filling the light rays at the edges towards the central area. This redistribution of light effectively "peaks and valleys", transforming the Gaussian distribution of light intensity into a uniform or "flat top" distribution along the output line, eliminating central hotspots and dim edges. At the same time, the Powell prism also causes the beam to diverge in one direction, forming a continuous and uniform straight laser beam. Traditionally, cylindrical lenses may also be used to generate line lasers, but the uniformity of the lines produced by cylindrical lenses is poor. The Powell prism, with its unique non spherical design, cleverly utilizes aberrations to convert Gaussian beams into uniformly distributed line lasers, solving the problem of uneven light generated by traditional cylindrical lenses. It plays a key role in fields such as machine vision, 3D scanning, precision measurement, and laser processing that require high illumination uniformity. When choosing a Powell prism, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the working wavelength, sector angle, line uniformity, laser power, and compatibility with application requirements.
